Human Resource Management - Introduction

An organization is a combination of people with formally assigned roles and responsibilities who are working together to achieve organizational objectives. Human resource management (HRM) is the process of acquiring, training, appraising, and compensating employees, and of attending to their labor relations, health and safety, and fairness concerns(Dessler, 2020).  Human Resource focuses on attracting, developing, and maintaining a pool of talented and energetic workforce in-order to support organizational mission, goals, and objectives. Managers take responsibility for achieving organizational objectives through the effective utilization of human resources in the organization.

There are five basic functions a manager undertakes. These functions depict the management process.

1) Planning- Planning involves implementing organizational goals and standards, drafting future plans, and developing procedures and rules.

2) Organizing - Assigning specific tasks to the subordinates, delegating authority, establishing channels of communication, and coordinating the work

3) Staffing - Understanding the type of talent required, initiating the recruitment process, selection, onboarding, implementing the performance standards, analyzing and evaluating the performance, training, and development

4) Leading - Motivating the subordinates toward the attainment of organizational objectives, getting the job done, and maintaining the morale of the employees

5) Controlling - Evaluating the actual performance with the set standards and taking the corrective measures

Human resource management focuses on the staffing function of the management.
